Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA), a division of the University of Miami/Miller School of Medicine DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery, is a non-profit community service organization certified and regulated by the federal government (CMS-Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services). The agency obtains organs for clinical transplantation throughout southeast Florida and transports them to transplant centers within its region and throughout the United States. LAORA procures an average of 500 organs annually from over 80 donor hospitals within the agency’s area of certification. LAORA’s catchment area, designated by the Department of Health and Human Services, is comprised of seven counties in South Florida --- Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, Palm Beach, Martin, Collier and St. Lucie. LAORA is dedicated to procuring and fairly distributing organs and tissues for transplantation, providing comfort and assistance to bereaved donor families, educating healthcare professionals and the community about organ donation, and improving transplant success rates by researching innovative organ recovery techniques and preservation technologies. LAORA has grown to become one of the most active procurement organizations in the nation, in both quantity and quality of organs recovered. Since the program was initiated in 1978, more than 5,000 organ retrievals have occurred resulting in transplantations for nearly 13,000 persons across the United States.

Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
Care for the full spectrum of vascular and endovascular diseases and their management are delivered by the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. Both venous and arterial disorders of the cerebrovascular, aortic visceral, and extremity circulations are evaluated and managed.
The Vascular Access section provides access surgery for hemodialysis. Surgical cases include primary autogenous AV Fistulas, access grafting using PTFE grafts and CAPD catheters for peritoneal dialysis.
