Dermatology

The Department of Dermatology cares for all problems of the skin, hair and nails. These problems range from cosmetic ones, such as tattoos, leg veins, facial wrinkles and acne scars, to skin cancer. The range of therapeutic methods also is wide, including microscopically controlled surgery, Mohs, laser therapy, phototherapy and cryotherapy.

In addition to general dermatology, the department has established a wound-healing program for outpatient and inpatient treatment of leg ulcers and other wounds, a laser therapy program, a psoriasis therapy program, a large state-of-the-art inpatient dermatology service, and a well-developed pediatric dermatology division. The Mohs surgery unit, pigmented skin lesion clinics and a multidisciplinary melanoma board, located in the UMHC/Sylvester patient care facility serve as resources for patients with skin cancer. Numerous clinical studies offer new treatment alternatives for therapeutic problems of the skin not available elsewhere.

Clinics held in the Ambulatory Care Center include general and special dermatology procedures, phototherapy, and specific clinics for keloids, Hansen's disease and special immunology dermatology.

Other clinical facilities for the Department of Dermatology are located in a freestanding historic building with adjacent parking on the medical campus.
