Medicine
The Department of Medicine consists of more than 200 full-time faculty members actively engaged in teaching, research and clinical care. All of the subspecialties of internal medicine are represented. The department's clinical and research facilities are available to the community, and practicing physicians are invited to participate in a variety of teaching programs.
ALLERGY & IMMUNOLOGY
In addition to the common illnesses such as allergic rhinitis and asthma, primary immunologic disorders such as hypogammaglobulinemia and hapatology are diagnosed and treated by this service.
CARDIOLOGY
The Division of Cardiology provides all levels (primary, secondary and tertiary) of referral services for all subdivisions of the disciplines of cardiovascular diseases, including the following:
Acute Cardiac Care — diagnostic intervention and management of acute myocardial infarction and other ischemic syndromes, acute heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias.
Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Cardiology — complete diagnostic services for ischemic, valvular, degenerative and congenital heart disease. Specialized procedures include myocardial biopsy, percutaneous angioplasty, balloon valvuloplasty, athererctomy and stent.
Cardiac Electrophysiology — electrophysiologically guided diagnosis and management of supraventricular, A-V junctional and ventricular arrhythmias and survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Catheter ablation procedures for supraventricular tachycardias, including W-P-W syndrome, and selected ventricular arrhythmias. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators for selected high-risk patients.
Cardiac Transplantation — transplantation plus evaluation of patients referred as potential transplant candidates, and long-term follow-up of transplant patients.
Outpatient Diagnostic Procedures — consultative cardiology including echocardiography, treadmill stress testing with thallium imaging, radionuclide angiocardiography, ambulatory monitoring for arrhythmias and silent ischemia, outpatient cardiac catherterization and evaluation of unexplained syncope, including head-up tilt testing.
ENDOCRINOLOGY
Special areas include the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the thyroid, adrenal and parathyroid glands, as well as research and treatment in osteoporosis.
GENERAL MEDICINE
The Division of General Medicine provides adult primary care, including health maintenance and preventive health care, as well as medical management of disease states. Perioperative evaluation, post operative care and internal medicine consultation for second opinions also are available. Patients will be seen and sent back to the referring physician with an opinion and recommendations. Executive physicals for both domestic and international patients are available with arrangements made to be competitive. Many members of the division have special areas of expertise.
GENETIC MEDICINE
Consultation for and diagnosis of adult genetic disorders are performed by the Genetic Medicine Division. In addition, genetic counseling in anticipation of marriage or childbirth is offered, as is paternity testing.
HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY, CENTER FOR BLOOD DISEASES
The Division of Hematology/Oncology specialized in chemotherapy, combined therapy and medical management of cancers and blood diseases. Treatments include bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, new anti-tumor agents and combinations of anti-tumor agents, continuous intravenous infusion, intra-arterial infusion and intraperitoneal infusion.
The William J. Harrington Center for Blood Diseases is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases, in addition to research and education in hematologic disorders. Areas of special expertise include anemias, leukemias, lymphomas, myelomas, and hemorrhagic disorders. The Lymphoma Clinic coordinates a multidisciplinary approach to patients with lymphoid neoplasms. The Special Hematology Lab conducts platelet antibody studies, autoimmune testing and leukemia and lymphoma profiles.
DIVISION OF HEPATOLOGY, CENTER FOR LIVER DISEASES
The Center for Liver Diseases has clinical, laboratory and endoscopic facilities available for the diagnosis and management of patients with hepatobiliary disorders. Candidates for liver transplantation also are evaluated.
The Hepatology Diagnostic Laboratory provides testing for the entire spectrum of serologic parameters in viral hepatitis.
NEPHROLOGY AND HYPERTENSION
This division offers diagnosis and treatment of all acute and chronic renal diseases in adult patients. Acute and chronic dialysis support is available, as well as renal biopsy and renal pathology services. Other areas of major interest are hypertension and disorders of water, electrolytes, and acid-based metabolism; and work-ups for renal transplantation.
PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE
This division of the Department of Medicine offers a complete academic pulmonary and critical care service for ambulatory and hospitalized patients. The services are available at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and two UM-affiliated hospitals, Mount Sinai Medical Center (teaching hospital) and A.G. Holley Hospital (tuberculosis treatment facility). Pulmonary and critical care faculty members provide direct patient care and are involved actively in graduate and postgraduate teaching as well as basic and clinical research. Clinical expertise is available in all aspects of pulmonary and critical care illness, with special interest in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, adult cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, tuberculosis and breathing disorders during sleep.
Inpatient services of the division include pulmonary and critical care consultation, medical intensive care units, lung transplantation and volume-reduction surgery, care of difficult-to-treat patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and evaluation of drug therapy for pulmonary hypertension. Ambulatory services include pulmonary consultation, follow-up, and evaluation of sleep disorders. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures include pulmonary function tests including bronchial provocation, cardiopulmonary stress tests, fiberoptic brochoscopy including brachytherapy and bronchial stent placement, thoracoscopy and polysomnography.
RHEUMATOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY
Particular areas of expertise of this division are osteoarthritis, unusual disorders such as scleroderma, Paget's disease of bone, systemic lupus erythematosus and other collgen-vascular diseases. Also available is the use of disease-modifying agents in osteoarthritis and chronic severe rheumatoid arthritis.
