Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, comprising the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital, William L. McKnight Vision Research Center, and the Edith and Earl Retter Auditorium, serves as the Department of Ophthalmology. Bascom Palmer is the largest facility of its kind in the southeastern United States, annually performing 8,000 surgeries and treating more than 130,000 patients with virtually every ophthalmic disorder. For nine consecutive years, Bascom Palmer has been rated among the top two eye hospitals in the nation by ophthalmologists survey by US News & World Report. In 1996, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the Palm Beaches opened to serve patients in the areas of Martin and Palm Beach Counties.
