Pathology-Anatomic and Clinical
Overview
The Pathology
Residency Training Program at Jackson Memorial
Hospital/ University of Miami Miller School
of Medicine is a fully-accredited four-year program that integrates anatomic pathology and
clinical pathology rotations under the supervision of over 30
full-time teaching faculty.
The Anatomic Pathology Resident Training includes rotations in autopsy
pathology, surgical pathology, cytopathology forensic pathology, transplant and
immunopathology. We have a subspeciality surgical pathology practice.
Consequently, residents enjoy specific rotations on surgical pathology of
specific organ systems including breast, endocrine, GYN, GI, GU, head and neck
and liver/pancreas. The Clinical Pathology Resident Training Program includes
rotations in clinical chemistry, cytogenetics, hematology/flow cytometry,
hematopathology, medical microbiology, coagulation, and blood
banking/transfusion medicine. Included in these rotations are experiences in
special techniques such as flow cytometry, histology and rapid tissue
processing, molecular biology, laboratory management and medical informatics.
Elective rotations include blood-banking, dermatopathology, laboratory
management of private pathology practice, neuropathology, pediatric pathology
and special coagulation.
The educational experience also includes formal didactic sessions,
problem-based microscopic conferences, resident-presented cases conferences and
journal clubs and tumor boards. Well-developed, HIPPA-compliant hospital
computer programs provide ready access to patient imaging studies and laboratory
results to further facilitate clinico-pathological correlations and pathological
interpretations.
The Pathology Residency Training Program is approved for twenty-two (22)
resident positions by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
(ACGME) and fulfills the requirements of the American Board of Pathology
(Program Number: 3001121075). Resident funding has increased during the past
three years. As a result, we have 20 full-time residents, and four fellows in
the 2009-2010 training year.
ACGME-accredited one-year fellowships include:
Cytopathology Fellowships Hematopathology
Fellowship
Pediatric Pathology
Fellowship Blood
Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship
