Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: How can I apply to the residency
program? A: We only
accept electronic applications via ERAS for current medical students and those
who have not completed accredited internships.
Q: Are you accepting applications for 2010 and 2011? A:
Yes. We are accepting applications for internship (to start 2010) and CA-1
positions (to start 2011).
Q: Do you have any available PGY-2 positions for
2010? A: We do not presently have any available positions for
the 2010 academic year. However, positions do become available from time to
time. If you are currently enrolled in or have completed an accredited
internship, you may submit an application to the house staff office. We will
contact you if a position becomes available. You may also apply through
ERAS.
Q: Are there any USMLE score requirements? A: We extend
interviews only to applicants with superior board scores, but consider each
application individually. Applicants for CA-1 or internship positions must
provide proof of successful completion of Step 2 CK by April 30 of the same
academic year.
Q: Does the hospital sponsor any visas? A: The
hospital sponsors H1 and J1 visas.
Q: Does the program participate in the
Match? A: All of the 3 and 4 year positions will go through
the Match.
Q: Is there another start date available other than June or
July? A: The PGY 2 clinical year begins on July 1 and the PGY
1 clinical year begins June 24. We make only rare exceptions to start off-cycle
as this is never in a resident’s best interest.
Q: How often are residents on call? A: The
call schedule varies by hospital facility. Some locations require taking
in-house call every fourth night, while others have no in-house call with call
from home. The average number on nights in-house averages 1 in 6 over the course
of each academic year.
Q: When are the resident lectures? A:
Lectures directed at your clinical levels are held weekly with 100% relief
provided from 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. Once a month there is a departmental Journal
Club on Wednesdays from 4:15 p.m. – 5 p.m. Grand Rounds are held each Thursday
morning from 6:45 a.m. – 7:45 a.m., with many nationally known professors
lecturing to our residents. At least once a month our Visiting Professor gives
the Wednesday lecture and participates in M&M conference.
Q: Can I arrange an externship in your residency
program? A: Externship positions are very limited. Please
contact Mr. Victor Chacon via email at VChacon@med.miami.edu for more
information about externships.
