Anesthesiology Critical Care
Welcome to the Anesthesia Critical Care Fellowship Web
site and thank you for considering Jackson Memorial Hospital for your
specialized training in anesthesia critical care. After completion of the
fellowship, our fellows have gone on to have very successful careers in all
areas of anesthesiology and critical care. Below is a brief description of
our program and its structure. The first step however, is to complete the
application and send all the necessary documents for review and we will contact
you for an interview. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the
fellowship coordinator Mrs. Maria-Cristina Wells-Albornoz at 305-585-1191, 2-1

Description 2007 Anesthesiology Critical Care
Fellowship
The clinical experience of the critical care fellows at
Jackson Memorial Hospital is very comprehensive, including rotations in four
different Intensive Care Units, which are the Veterans Administration Hospital Intensive Care
Unit (VAICU), Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CSICU), Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU),
and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). JMH is a
large referral center and it is common at any given time
to have patients on ECMO, Ventricular Assist Devices as well as
advanced modes of ventilation.
Fellows take in house call less than 20% of their year, and the passing rate
of the subspecialty board after completing our fellowship is 100%. For the last
3 years, the fellows have been very successful at submitting and presenting
abstracts at national meetings. Our fellowship is fully accredited by the
ACGME.
The fellows are expected to direct patient care in each of their clinical
rotations. In addition, every week there are daily conferences ranging from
journal clubs, didactic sessions, visiting professors, as well as opportunity to
conduct and participate in research activities.
A typical day starts at 7:00 am with the fellow reviewing the occurrences
of the night in the unit they are assigned to. Rounds start at 8:00 am with
a comprehensive assessment of the patients problems. During rounds, the
faculty encourages active fellow participation in the development of the plan
for the day. During the afternoon and early evening, the fellow is responsible
to see that it gets done. The fellow is also responsible for screening and
admitting patients to the intensive care unit.
The Critical Care fellowship program at JMH provides the fellows with an
extensive array of resources, both in the form of experienced clinicians and
multiple consultation services for specific problems as well as state of the art
equipment and pharmacotherapy. The fellows are encouraged and constantly
challenged to solve diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas and are evaluated on
their ability to use all the appropriate resources at their reach as well as
cost effective measures.
In addition to the clinical rotations, electives can be arranged during the
fellowship year. Popular electives in the past have been in the Trauma
Anesthesia Division as well as TEE or liver transplant experience.
Sincerely,
Ricardo Martinez-Ruiz, M.D. Program Director, Critical Care
