Anesthesiology Pain Management
Fellows are trained at the UM Pain Center under the
direction of Dennis Patin, M.D. Fellows are typically graduates from
accredited anesthesiology residency programs. However, because of
multidisciplinary nature of pain management, graduates from other programs, such
as neurology and PMR, are also encouraged to apply for the fellowship training
in our Pain Center.
Fellowship training lasts for 12 months for each class. The fellows
spend three to four months in each of our three major training hospitals:
Jackson Memorial Hospital, Sylvester Cancer Center and Miami VA Hospital. One
month of vacation is also offered to each fellow.
The fellowship training program is designed to offer each fellow a first-hand
experience in patient examination, clinical diagnosis, and formulation of
treatment plan for each individual patient under the close supervision of
attending physicians. Fellows also have plenty of chance to perform
state-of-the-art pain relieving procedures, such as epidural steroid injection,
RFL, discography, IDET, intrathecal pump implantation, spinal cord stimulator
implantation and management.
At the UM Pain Center, fellows are encouraged to be the team leader in
the in-hospital acute and chronic pain consulting services. After a resident
sees a new patient, the case is usually presented to the fellow in the team
first, before the final decision is made together with an attending.
Three Journal Clubs and two Noon Pain Case Conferences are offered each week
in the JMH pain clinic. In the Journal Club, attendings often lead the
discussion. In the Case Conference, fellows moderate the sessions. Fellows are
encouraged to participate in clinical and/or basic science research.
