Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Division of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is a four-year certification program located in
Miami, Florida. The program offers various assets including
internationally recognized faculty, international referrals, a challenging
environment, and a tremendous volume of maxillofacial trauma. However, the
greatest aspect of the UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital program is the surgical
experience offered to the residents.
Jackson Memorial Hospital is a Level One Trauma Center, and the division of
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery covers approximately 63% of all facial trauma
calls. The OMFS service operates at three different hospitals for a total
of ten OR days per week. The program receives national and international
referrals and is exposed to pathology that other programs see only in
textbooks. The surgical and anesthesia experience offered to the residents
begins in their first year, and continues for an intense four-year period.
The Division of OMFS consists only of full time faculty with a total commitment
to education and community service. There are no other training programs
similar to this in surgical volume, case selection, and
history.
Scope of Services: The OMFS Residency
Program specializes in pathology, trauma, anesthesia, and reconstructive
surgery. In addition, it offers training in dentoalveolar, implant,
orthognathic, and TMJ surgeries. Finally in an agreement with the United
States Naval Dental Corp, additional training in orthognathic, cosmetics, and
TMJ is provided to the resident at the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in
Portsmouth, Virginia.
